Current Abortion Laws in Kentucky
As of May 2025, abortion is completely banned in Kentucky because of a new law that went into effect on June 24, 2022. Exceptions for abortion in Kentucky include the following:
- To save the pregnant person’s life
- To prevent a serious risk to the pregnant person’s physical health
Some other abortion policies that are in effect in the state of Kentucky include:
- Women must receive counseling before abortion, one in-person and another at least 24 hours later
- Women must receive an ultrasound
- State Medicaid coverage of abortion care is banned except in limited circumstances.
- Medication abortion can only be provided following an in-person visit because the state bans the use of telehealth for abortion.
- Parental consent is required for a minor’s abortion
- Only physicians can provide abortion, and not other healthcare professionals
