Maybe you have only been dating for a few weeks or months. You may still be learning how your partner communicates, and now you have news that feels much larger than anything you have discussed before. It makes sense if you are unsure how to begin.
Crossroads Life Center offers a free, confidential place to be heard and prepare for the conversation ahead. A mentor can sit with you as you sort through what you are feeling, decide what you want your partner to understand, and identify questions you may want answered first. You do not need to arrive with a script or a plan for every outcome. You can simply begin with what is on your mind.

Begin With What You Know
One of the most grounding things you can do before this conversation is gather the facts of your own situation. Crossroads Life Center offers free, confidential, self-administered medical-grade pregnancy tests and time with a mentor to discuss your questions and circumstances.
Following a positive result, we can also discuss a referral for a limited ultrasound. An ultrasound scan may provide additional information, including estimated gestational age and whether the pregnancy appears to be located in the uterus.
There is no expectation that you will have it all figured out before you speak with your partner. Knowing the facts of your pregnancy simply means you are starting the conversation from a place of clarity rather than guesswork.
Consider the Time and Setting
Choose a moment when neither of you feel hurried and a place where you feel comfortable. If meeting in person does not feel right, a phone call is a reasonable alternative. Having someone you trust nearby afterward is also worth considering.
You do not need to begin with a decision. A simple starting point might be: “I took a pregnancy test, and the result was positive. I’m still processing what this means, but I wanted to talk with you.”
One Conversation Does Not Decide Everything
Your partner may need time to process the news, just as you may need time to understand your own thoughts and feelings. A first reaction does not necessarily represent everything either of you will feel as the days go on.
You can listen to your partner without agreeing to make an immediate pregnancy decision. If the conversation begins to feel rushed or pressured, it is reasonable to pause. You might say, “I hear what you are saying, but I need some time to think and gather more information before we talk further.”
Your timeline matters. You do not owe anyone a decision before you feel ready to make one.
