It is hard to think about anything else when you think you might be pregnant. You may wonder if every physical sensation is a pregnancy symptom. Whether you were planning to get pregnant or not, a lot is riding on finding out if you are pregnant.
Crossroads Life Center offers free medical-grade pregnancy tests so you can be confident in the results.
When Should You Test?
The date you test for pregnancy is as important as choosing a quality test. Pregnancy tests work by detecting human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) in a woman’s urine.
HCG is a hormone released by the placenta after an embryo implants in the wall of the uterus. This means a pregnancy test cannot detect pregnancy until the embryo has implanted and hCG has built up to a certain level. Usually, this means you can expect reliable pregnancy test results the day after your missed period.
We also recommend that you use more concentrated urine to test for pregnancy. Use early morning urine for best results.
Some women have an irregular cycle or choose not to track their menstrual cycle. This can make it more challenging to know when to expect your period. In this case, women should test 3 weeks after unprotected sex.
Pregnancy Symptoms
Because other medical conditions can explain pregnancy symptoms, they should not be used as a primary means of diagnosing a pregnancy. However, they can be helpful when determining if you should test for pregnancy.
Early pregnancy symptoms can include:
- Missed period
- Nausea with or without vomiting
- Swollen tender breasts
- Frequent urination
- Bloating
- Fatigue
- Mood swings
If you had sex and are experiencing one or more of these symptoms, you should test for pregnancy.
