Two Types of Abortion
Abortion procedures vary depending on how far along the pregnancy is and other factors. The two types of abortion are medical abortion and surgical abortion.
Medical Abortion (The Abortion Pill)
Medical abortion, commonly referred to as the abortion pill, involves taking two different drugs: mifepristone and misoprostol.
Mifepristone is taken first. It blocks progesterone, a hormone necessary for the pregnancy’s growth and development. Next, misoprostol causes the uterus to contract and expel the pregnancy. The woman will experience cramping and bleeding as the pregnancy is expelled from the body.
This method is FDA-approved through 10 weeks of pregnancy. After that timeframe, it may become less effective and increase the likelihood of complications.
Additional side effects of abortion drugs include:
- Upset stomach
- Vomiting
- Fever
- Chills
- Diarrhea
- Headache
There are also risks associated with medical abortion. It’s critical to consider the following before making a decision.
- Digestive symptoms (i.e., upset stomach)
- Fever
- Infection
- Heavy, prolonged bleeding
- An incomplete abortion, potentially requiring surgical treatment
Surgical Abortion
Surgical abortion is a procedure that takes place in a clinic or hospital setting. It typically involves instruments, suction, and drugs to remove the pregnancy. Surgical abortions usually become more complex as the pregnancy progresses.
Common side effects associated with surgical abortions include mild cramping and light spotting or bleeding. Certain risks, which can be severe, are also present with this method, which include:
- Perforation of the uterus (when a surgical tool pokes a hole in the uterus)
- Damage to the cervix
- Scar tissue on the uterine wall
- Infection
